Why It’s Underrated: In a year like 2020, a lot of us have turned to old favorites to soothe our worries and offer a sense of comfort. Often, those shows are the ones we grew up and come of age with during our adolescence like Sister, Sister and Dawson’s Creek. Thankfully, Netflix offers plenty of throwback favorites on its roster, but the streamer also boasts an inimitable amount of originals in the teen comfort TV niche. This year’s musical dramedy Julie and the Phantoms ranks as one of 2020’s most underrated must-watch Netflix shows.

Based on the Brazilian show Julie e os Fantasmas, Madison Reyes stars in Julie and the Phantoms as the titular Julie Molina, a high school student and aspiring musician struggling to create new music in the wake of her mother’s passing. Julie finds herself somehow summoning the spirits of a dead band from 1995. As Julie’s friendship with the band grows, her own spirit and confidence blossoms to place where she’s once again able to write and perform with her new band, Julie and the Phantoms.

Julie and the Phantoms debuted on Netflix this September and quickly amasses positive reviews from critics, topping out at a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. While the series found a core fandom for The Phantoms, the confusing marketing for the series seemed to secure its underrated standing. Is a series for families? Is it a teen series accessible to anyone? Maybe the pre-premiere mixed signals deterred the show from expanding beyond its niche, but Julie and the Phantoms is one underrated binge-watch you’ll want to keep watching over and over.
