Why It’s Underrated: In many ways, the Netflix original limited series Unorthodox isn’t underrated. The series earned universal acclaim from critics and landed eight Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series for star Shira Haas. Unorthodox, which won an Emmy for directing, certainly didn’t go without its due praise, but the truly outstanding limited series didn’t get the viral treatment fans typically give the most popular shows on the streaming service.

Based on the biography Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots by Deborah Feldman, Unorthodox follows a 19-year-old Jewish woman named Esty Shapiro (Shira Haas), who finds herself living in what’s become an unhappy arranged marriage. She runs away from the ultra-Orthodox community of Brooklyn, New York to Berlin, the home of her estranged mother. In Berlin, Esty takes on a secular life that’s a rejection of everything she has known.

Unorthodox holds a near-perfect 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with extra praise given to Haas’s performance and the care taken to respect the book upon which the series is based. The four-episode limited series began streaming on Netflix in March 2020 but was seemingly overshadowed by shows with more buzz, like Tiger King and unscripted escapism. Don’t let yourself to end 2020 without watching Unorthodox, one of the year’s best and most underrated Netflix shows.
