Locke and Key season 3 is officially happening at Netflix

It hasn’t been an easy road for Locke and Key, but it’s had a lot of good news recently. The latest is that Locke and Key season 3 is definitely happening.

The second season hasn’t even premiered yet. In fact, we don’t have a premiere date at all. Filming is set to wrap in Toronto this week, according to Variety, but Netflix hasn’t set a release date for the season just yet.

Despite that, the streamer has a lot of faith in the show. It’s not often Netflix renews a show ahead of release, especially when it comes to the third season, which is when the costs increase exponentially for the streamer. At least we know we can binge-watch the entire second season without worrying about a cliffhanger at the end.

Production will start on Locke and Key season 3 within the next few months, remaining in Toronto. Even though Toronto has ended another lockdown, filming has been allowed to continue this time with strict protocols.

Locke and Key season 3 comes with Meredith Averill’s overall deal

The news comes as Locke and Key showrunner Meredith Averill signing an overall deal with Netflix. It’s clear she is more than happy with Netflix’s continued push for being more creative and making sure projects stand out in new ways.

The journey to get to the series just airing anywhere wasn’t easy. Initially, it was going to air on Hulu, and then after writing the scripts and filming the pilot, Hulu decided not to pick up the series after all.

Netflix stepped in but wanted a whole new take on the show. It was back to the drawing board. At the time, it may not have felt worth it, except that it was a passion project. With the third season renewal, it’s clear that Netflix was always the home it was supposed to have.

Will Locke and Key season 3 be the last? That’s not something for us to worry about just yet. Let’s see how the story unfolds in the second season first.
