15. Cafe Disco (season 5, episode 27)

“Cafe Disco” is another episode that combines “oh my god, what did he just do?” and “awww that’s cute.” With how many episodes this combination of cringe and heartwarming occurs, it’s clear the writers are especially good at it.

Despite Michael’s paper company, Michael Scott Paper Company (Michael is very creative), closing, Michael still has the lease on the closet he used as office space. So…he decides to turn it into a dance club and calls it Cafe Disco. It will allow the employees to socialize, have coffee, and of course, dance, but when he tells them to come join him, they all decline. Never one to give up on a plan, Michael blasts music through the vents

After this, Phyllis gives in and makes an appearance. Unfortunately, she then throws out her back from dancing. Once the rest of the office learns of her injury, it further cements their opinion that Cafe Disco is a bad idea.

Pissed off, Michael tells Erin to close up the closet, so she and Kelly go down there but get distracted when they turn on the music and start dancing.

When a few male employees from Vance Refrigeration see them, they join in which causes the Dunder-Mifflin employees to come to the party as well. Kelly and Andy start a dance-off against each other and Kevin ends up making out with his girlfriend in the corner. Michael could not be more pleased.

While all of this is happening, Jim and Pam are trying to figure out what to do for their wedding. At first, they decide to forget spending all that money and just have a courthouse ceremony, but as they are leaving to get married, they stop by Cafe Disco and actually have fun. This makes them realize they do want a full-on wedding ceremony.

The episode ends with Kelly piercing Andy’s ear with a pin in the bathroom.

What starts as Michael’s usual nonsense shenanigans turns into something that is actually fun and good for his employees. It’s not really his doing since it only became a success when Erin and Kelly started dancing, but he’s definitely going to take the credit.
