Bridgerton is based on a series of books by Julia Quinn

On Christmas Day (Dec. 25), a much-anticipated new Netflix original series will debut on the streaming network: Bridgerton.

Under the helm of Shondaland, producer Shonda Rhimes brings to life an adaptation of a series of Regency-era historical romance novels by best-selling author Julia Quinn, which have been compared to the works of Jane Austen.

The Bridgerton books

The series has its own page on author Julia Quinn’s site, which includes a short description of what the series overall is about:

"“Eight siblings, alphabetically named. They bicker, they joke, but they love each other fiercely.”"

There are eight books in the series, including:

  1. Book 1 – The Duke and I
  2. Book 2 – The Viscount Who Loved Me
  3. Book 3 – An Offer from a Gentleman
  4. Bok 4 – Romancing Mister Bridgerton
  5. Book 5 – To Sir Phillip, With Love
  6. Book 6 – When He Was Wicked
  7. Book 7 – It’s In His Kiss
  8. Book 8 – On the Way to the Wedding

There is also The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, a collection of “eight sexy, funny, and heartwarming ‘2nd epilogues,’ plus a bonus story about none other than the wise and witty Violet Bridgerton herself.”

These stories answer questions readers want to know most, like what happens next?

And if that’s not enough, there’s even more: two novellas, The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown and Lady Whistledown Strikes Back. Both novellas are co-written by Suzanne Enoch, Karen Hawkins and Mia Ryan.

Which book will Bridgerton season 1 be about?

From the trailer, it appears season 1 will be an adaptation of Book 1 in the book series, The Duke and I.

Daphne Bridgerton has been labeled an unsuitable match by snarky society gossip, Lady Whistledown (whose narration will be voiced by Julie Andrews). Daphne forms a scheme with the dashing, charming and much sought after Simon Basset. He’s a cad at heart, but if it appears he’s in a committed relationship, he won’t have to deal with marriage-minded moms hunting him down anymore.

It seems like a win-win for the pair, but will the ruse end up in a real-life love and marriage match?

We’ll find out when Bridgerton premieres on December 25.
