Once Upon a Time

The first six seasons of Once Upon a Time were beautifully created. We got so many different fairytales and saw some unconventional versions of some. There were so many couples to root for, and it was even hard not to like Regina/Evil Queen.

And then multiple main characters chose to leave at the end of Season 6. The writers had to reboot the entire series, which wasn’t easy when Hook and Swan would no longer be together!

Had this reboot come around the season 4 mark, it might have worked. However, it didn’t work when the viewership was already dropping for the series. Wouldn’t it have been better to end the series with an epic season 6 finale working as the series finale?

The Vampire Diaries

Another show that struggled for two seasons after the loss of a main character was The Vampire Diaries. Elena Gilbert decided not to renew her contract after season 6. And, of course, Elena was the main character of the show up to this point. For so long it had been about which Salvatore brother she would choose.

We had got to know other characters along the way. We certainly rooted for a few here and there, but the writers just didn’t quite hit the mark with changing the focus onto one of them.

Let’s not forget that the loss of Gilbert didn’t just mean no more Elena. It also meant no more Katherine Pierce, and she was one formidable villain. Something always felt missing without Gilbert there, putting it on the list of shows that got worse after the lead left.
