Netflix shows canceled in 2020: Spinning Out

While Disney+ is full of positive, inspiring teen ice-skating films, Netflix definitely took a different approach with Spinning Out. It’s unfortunate that this series had to be one of the good Netflix shows canceled in 2020 after just one season because it shows a very unglamorous and demented side to a highly demanding, pressure-filled, risky sport.

Created by Samantha Stratton, Spinning Out follows Kat Baker (Kaya Scodelario), a professional and die-hard single skater who is about to do a 180 and turn in her skates after a disastrous fall and head injury took her off the competition track. Her decision is met with spiteful remarks from her mother and so, to prove her wrong, Kat agrees to continue her career as a pair skater with a male partner who has a bad-boy reputation and a narrow vision on getting to the Olympics. On the ice, Kat struggles with plenty of pressure, but off the ice she begins to unravel mentally, doing her best to hide her family’s history of mental illness.

Spinning Out borrows themes from I, Tonya, The Cutting Edge and Ice Castles for a romantic and thoughtful psychological exploration into the mind of both an athlete and performer struggling with her own state of mind. Hopefully, Spinning Out isn’t the last we see of Stratton’s sports series creations.
