Netflix shows canceled in 2020: Messiah

The religious thriller series, created by Michael Petroni, was canceled by Netflix after just one season. Logistically, Messiah being one of the good Netflix shows canceled in 2020 makes sense, since the first season alone took place in Amman, Jordan; Albuquerque, Mountainair, Estancia, Belen, Santa Fe and Clines Corners and New Mexico. That’s a hefty amount of travel that’s currently not in the cards due to the COVID pandemic. But Messiah, despite its creative approach to an often adapted story, the show was met with criticism from reviews as well as religious organizations.

Starring Mehdi Dehbi, Tomer Sisley, Michelle Monaghan and John Ortiz, Messiah focuses on the modern world’s various reactions to what could be perceived as the second coming of Christ. When a man mysteriously appears out of nowhere in the Middle East and begins leading large groups of people with a message from his “father,” a CIA offer (Monaghan) becomes concerned and starts investigating. Unsure whether the man is actually Jesus or a con artist, the investigation is bombarded with videos of apparent miracles which then sparks an international following.

The series, while highly creative in its delivery of a biblical prophecy that’s been the focus of cinema many times over, received critical ratings and disapproval from Muslim communities for the uneducated delivery of certain characters and names in the series, though COVID was still the primary reason for the cancellation. But Messiah‘s plot is unlike anything done before to illustrate the second coming of Christ and offers refreshing moral dilemmas for viewers as they too try to uncover the truth.
