Netflix shows canceled in 2020: Hoops

Adult animation has been stealing the streaming show on Netflix this year, which is why it was surprising a show like Hoops would have been bumped as one of the good Netflix shows canceled in 2020. Instead of COVID being the cancellation culprit, Hoops‘ short-lived time on Netflix was due to critical responses received about the show’s plot and dialogue.

Staring New Girl’s Jake Johnson, Hoops follows a foul-mouthed high school coach named Ben Hopkins determined to turn his failure-ridden life around by turning an otherwise terrible school basketball team into rockstar players for the “big leagues.” Though the school staff and his own father have little to less than no faith in him, Ben’s obnoxious but entertaining enthusiasm for his team’s success does manage to create waves of change for not only himself, but players on the team. Hoops, created by Ben Hoffman, has a very familiar vibe to films like Dodgeball and The Longest Yard, where a screw-up in one form or another steps up to create champion sports players out of a group of hopeless non-athletes as a metaphor for life’s struggles.

But even though the plot is as old as time, Johnson does bring a fresh voice (literally) to the show and delivers, albeit crude, dialogue hilariously. Canceled just four months after its August 2020 release, Hoops received generally negative reviews for its crude humor, though Netflix is no stranger to crude dialogue from animations such as Big Mouth and F Is for Family. It’s a shame we won’t get to hear more of Johnson’s voice acting rants, but at least we can look forward to seeing him in Jurassic World: Dominion.
