Netflix shows canceled in 2020: Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon was another surprising addition to the list of good Netflix shows canceled in 2020. The cyberpunk television series created by Laeta Kalogridis, and based on the 2002 novel of the same title by Richard K. Morgan, had two seasons under its belt plus a recently released, CG anime film, Altered Carbon: Resleeved. The story seemed to be on the rise until production was brought to a screeching halt six months after the second season released by not only the COVID pandemic, but also the fact that Altered Carbon has earned its place among the most expensive shows to ever be produced.

The first part of the series takes place over 360 years in the future, where a person’s memories and consciousness are able to be copied onto a chip called a “cortical stack,” which is implanted in the vertebrae at the back of the neck. This keeps the life of that person preserved even after they die, so long as their chip is not damaged.

When political operative and soldier Takeshi Kovacs becomes the sole survivor of a rebel group defeated in an uprising against the “new world order,” his stack is pulled out of prison and put in a new body by one of the wealthiest men in the Bay City metropolis, who offers Takeshi a new chance at life by solving the man’s own murder. Curious? You should be. Altered Carbon is definitely a gripping series and we will miss Takeshi as his long journey coming to a close.
