Netflix shows canceled in 2020: Away

We loved her in The Core and I Am Mother and we loved her in Andrew Hinderaker’s Away. But despite Hilary Swank’s natural talent for out-of-this-world screen content and an affinity for all things highly emotional, Netflix still cut short the actor’s latest sci-fi drama one month after it’s release. That’s cancelation in record time.

Inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name, Away tells the stories of the first crewed expedition to Mars, also known as the Mars Joint Initiative, featuring an international crew made up of a Chinese chemist, a world-leading British botanist, a Russian cosmonaut, an Indian medical officer and American commander Emma Green (Swank). Instead of the narrative centering around a singular disaster, as is the case with many space films, Away gets real and raw with a story about the realistic struggles and sacrifices astronauts make to expand our knowledge of the universe.

Though the reason for the cancelation is unclear other than Netflix likely making a viewer numbers call, the show was the second most-watched series on the streamer in September, the month of its release, spending 24 days in the U.S. top 10 and 12 days at No. 1. While the cancelation was quick, Away‘s uniquely authentic storytelling was a refreshing change of pace to the cataclysmic backbones of other galactic adventures.
