Overrated Netflix shows: The Haunting of Bly Manor

Seasons: 2

Created By: Mike Flanagan

Starring: Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Amelia Eve, T’Nia Miller, Rahul Kohli, Tahirah Sharif, Amelie Bea Smith, Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Henry Thomas

Why It’s Overrated: In the past few years, the embarrassment of riches in television has overcrowded the market. There’s so much to watch on so many streaming platforms and channels that it can be near impossible to keep up with everything. That being said, sometimes certain titles, no matter how high-profile or anticipated, can slip through the cracks. The Haunting of Bly Manor, the second installment of Netflix’s The Haunting anthology series, premiered in October but seemed to have had less of an impact as its predecessor The Haunting of Hill House.

Based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Haunting of Bly Manor stars Victoria Pedretti as Dani Clayton, a young woman hired as a nanny for the wealthy Wingrave family at the Bly estate in England. She looks after two children at the country house, but before long, Dani begins to experience with apparitions that haunt Bly Manor. As the hauntings start to  reveal dark secrets from the past, chilling tales of love and loss could change the future.

The Haunting of Bly Manor garnered positive reviews from critics, though the new installment marked a minor decline in comparison to the blockbuster first season. Unfortunately, viewership figures haven’t been touted by Netflix as the streamer typically does for its hottest series. Being so, Bly Manor made less of an impact than Hill House, which could be attributed to many things. Whether it’s the crowded streaming slate, the change in story, the decrease in scary chills or another factor altogether, The Haunting of Bly Manor was one of the most overrated Netflix shows of 2020.
