Overrated Netflix shows: Floor Is Lava

Seasons: 1

Created By: Megan McGrath and Irad Eyal

Starring: Rutledge Wood

Why It’s Overrated: Escapism never goes out of style, especially in the year 2020. By June, it’s no surprise that everyone was turning to a show about a children’s game come to larger-than-life life. This summer, Netflix released a unique new game show that briefly took the world by storm. Floor Is Lava took the game we remember from childhood and transformed it into a high-stakes competition series like Wipeout meets American Ninja Warrior.

Just like the childhood classic game of imagination, Floor Is Lava features contestants navigating an obstacle course while avoiding contact with the “lava” below them. But instead of imagining that the floor is made of lava, the ground has been filled gallons of mystery goo made to appear like the fiery molten liquid. The contestants are competing for a $100,000 grand prize as well as a lava lamp trophy — not to mention, the bragging rights that they stayed out of the lava.

To make the competition tougher, the first season of 10 episodes are split into level one and level two, with the latter increasing the difficulty. Floor Is Lava quickly became a fan-favorite binge-watch, bringing a healthy dose of much-needed silliness to summer 2020. There’s no doubt that Floor Is Lava could prove to be one of the most popular Netflix shows and run for multiple seasons. As fun as the series was this summer, does it really have staying power beyond 2020?
