Overrated Netflix shows: Space Force

Seasons: 1

Created By: Steve Carell and Greg Daniels

Starring: Steve Carell, John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome

Why It’s Overrated: Going into 2020, Space Force was among one of the most highly anticipated new Netflix shows. Steve Carell reunited with Greg Daniels, the creator of The Office, in another workplace comedy. What more could fans of The Office ask for in 2020? (Other than their favorite show staying put on Netflix, of course. But that’s not going to happen.) Unfortunately, Space Force didn’t meet the high expectations of many critics and fans.

Steve Carell stars in Space Force as General Mark R. Naird, who leads the team tasked with creating the United States Space Force as the sixth branch of the armed forces. Naird spearheads the mission as the Chief of Space Operations, and his team also includes a scientist, a social media manager and a helicopter pilot. Naturally, the series traces the ups and downs, many of which are expectedly comical and farcical, of the Space Force’s inner workings.

Upon release, Space Force earned mixed to negative reviews from critics and holds a 38% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s no surprise that both critics and fans loved Steve Carell’s performance, because anything he does in the comedy world is a win. But many wished the series had leaned further into political satire like Veep rather than playing it safe with traditional workplace comedy formulas. Still, Space Force was a hit viewed by over 40 million households within its first month of release and has been renewed for a second season. Maybe it’ll end up underrated next time.
