Why It’s Overrated: Lately, there’s been a resurgence of teen dramas on the small screen. After getting lost in the shuffle of the changing landscape of television in the 2010s, Netflix helped usher in a new era for coming-of-age stories that are fit to binge. As a realistic antidote to the high-camp melodrama of Riverdale, Netflix’s original series Grand Army premiered in October with an honest approach to the adolescent experience.

Based on Slut: The Play by creator Katie Cappiello, Grand Army follows Joey Del Marco (Odessa A’Zion), Dom Pierre (Odley Jean), Sid Pakam (Amir Bageria), Jayson Jackson Maliq Johnson) and Leila Kwan Zimmer (Amalia Yoo), who are students at Grand Army High School in Brooklyn, New York. The students come from diverse backgrounds and encounter relatable struggles at home, at school and in their personal lives.

Grand Army garnered mostly positive reviews from critics, holding a 71% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics likened its gritty tone and thoughtful thematics to ’90s classic teen drama My So-Called Life, while others dubbed the series too narratively ambitious and emotionally overwrought. In that sense, the series could be determined as overrated in comparison to the other, more palatable teen fare on the market. But we shouldn’t altogether write off Grand Army. The series didn’t make much of an impact and could benefit from a bigger viewership.
