Overrated Netflix shows: Emily in Paris

Seasons: 1

Created By: Darren Star

Starring: Lily Collins, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, Camille Razat

Why It’s Overrated: Honestly, we shouldn’t mince words here. Instead, we should all be thankful to have such a fun escape to sneak into like Emily in Paris. (Make sure to say it with a French accent so it rhymes!) For the past few years, there have been so many shows that are full-time serious, and of course, we talking about those up one side of the timeline and down the other. But comparatively “low brow” rom-coms meant to give your mind a vacation have just as much purpose. Emily in Paris won over the hype, and some are probably wondering if it’s deserving.

Lily Collins headlines Emily in Paris as the titular Emily Cooper, a 20-something American who moves to Paris from Chicago to begin a social media strategist position at a top marketing firm. Once in France, Emily experiences culture clashes and new struggles at work, but she also finds herself attempting to balance friendships and a budding romance with handsome chef Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) on top of everything else.

Emily in Paris earned mixed critical reception upon release, but the easily digestible spend a decent amount of time in the top 10 of Netflix shows and found its place in the quarantine zeitgeist. Anyone who devoured the series in one sitting waits anxiously for season 2 and welcomes its fantastical warmth. But for the casual viewer who doesn’t have a sweet tooth for cheesy romantic comedies and doesn’t value their beautiful worth, Emily in Paris might be a little too overrated.
