What is The Prom about?
What is The Prom on Netflix?
It’s time to dance as American Horror Story’s Ryan Murphy unleashes his musical side with The Prom.
Like he did with the drama The Boys in the Band, Ryan Murphy is expanding his range in a new Netflix movie, this time a musical comedy: The Prom.
It hit theaters on December 4 for a limited theatrical release, but it will also start streaming on Netflix on December 11.
Whereas Murphy left directing up to Joe Mantello for The Boys in the Band, he both directed and produced The Prom.
Let’s dive deeper into what it’s all about.
What is The Prom About?
Here’s the description from Netflix:
"A group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars shake up a small Indiana town as they rally behind a teen who just wants to attend prom with her girlfriend."
It has some big names attached, including Academy Award winners Meryl Streep (Dee Dee Allen) and Nicole Kidman (Angie Dickinson). Along with James Corden (Barry Glickman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), they form the group of down-on-their-luck stars looking for a way to make a comeback.
Newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman plays Emma Nolan, who just wants to go to the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). Principal Tom Hawkins (Keegan-Michael Key) supports her, but the PTA’s head, Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington), does not. It looks like she not only bans Emma and Alyssa from attending but cancels prom entirely.
When the actors learn of Emma’s situation, they see a way to resurrect their careers and images. They head to Indiana to take up Emma’s cause, but are they really there for her or just to promote themselves? And will these “cultural disruptors” change anything or just cause more heartbreak?
One thing’s for sure, limber up. The Prom is full of glitz and sparkle and big musical productions. It’s time to dance!
Is The Prom based on a book?
The Prom is an adaptation of a stage musical by the same name that first premiered in Atlanta in 2016 before debuting on Broadway in 2018.
