Do you really need to watch the 30 other episodes to enjoy The Crown season 4?

The Crown season 4 is now available on Netflix, and it’s the season that focuses on Margaret Thatcher’s time as Prime Minister and introduces Princess Diana. A lot of people want to watch it for these seasons but may not have watched the previous 30 episodes.

So, here comes the dilemma. Do you skip the first three seasons and jump straight to the fourth? Is that even possible? Or do you watch the first three seasons?

As a fan of the series, I will say that watching the first three seasons is preferable. You get to know a little more about the characters, especially Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, as their lives dictate the way they view duty over love and the meddling of the Crown in marriages.

However, knowing these backstories isn’t necessary to appreciate The Crown season 4.

You can watch The Crown season 4 first

It is possible to jump straight into the fourth season of the show. The two main powerhouses of the season are Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana. Both are introduced early in the fourth season. There’s no mention of them in the previous seasons.

The biggest thing you may miss is the introduction of Camilla Parker Bowles and the meddling the Royal Family did in that relationship. Prince Charles was in love with Camilla. It was always her. And while he was interested in Diana, he was never truly in love with her. The Crown season 3 shows how Charles and Camilla meet and connect; it shows how the Royal Family made sure the two couldn’t marry.

However, you can get a sense of all of that from the first episode of The Crown season 4. I don’t want to spoil anything but Charles says things to Dickie in the first episode and Princess Margaret airs her opinions, infering things that have been said in the past.

Everything is contained in the one season. But you’ll probably want to go back and watch the previous seasons. You’ll have time before the final two seasons.

You will need to watch The Crown season 4 to understand the story to come in The Crown season 5, especially when it comes to the end of Charles and Diana’s marriage.

The Crown season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
