Can we figure out what American Horror Story season 10 will be about based on the new poster Ryan Murphy shared?

American Horror Story season 9 hits Netflix in November 2020, but AHS fans are itching to know two things in particular: Is American Horror Story season 10 happening, and, if so, when is it coming to Netflix?

We know season 10 is happening. However, it won’t be coming to Netflix anytime soon. Normally the previous season drops on the streamer around the time the new season comes out.

Of course, this is 2020 we’re talking about so normal has been thrown out the window. American Horror Story season 10 wasn’t able to begin filming on schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore it wasn’t able to be released in 2020.

In fact, it only started filming in October 2020, which means it won’t premiere until 2021 and it won’t join the other American Horror Story seasons on Netflix until 2022.

So that’s some relief, right? We do have a season 10 to look forward to, except that leads us to another question, one that’s much more daunting to answer: what will season 10 be about?

American Horror Story season 10 clues so far

AHS creator Ryan Murphy is such a tease and loves tantalizing fans with clues about what the next season will be. American Horror Story season 10 has been no exception. (Sadly. I mean, come on, Ryan. Can’t you throw us more of a bone this year? Haven’t we suffered enough?)

Anyway, within the clues lies the answer to what season 10 will be about. We can discern a few things from Murphy’s Instagram shares so far, including who the cast will be and, as Screen Rant put it, that it will likely be “some kind of aquatic horror theme.”

Muddling the waters, however, are a couple of other clues about season 10 that refer to past seasons, including the Rubber Man.

And then there’s what Murphy had to say in an interview with Deadline on Nov. 13, 2019, which was before he started dropping season 10 clues on his Instagram in March.

"“…the people who helped build this show into what it is, who believed in it from the beginning, have been contacted and are interested. So if you look at the iconography of the first three seasons, you can figure who I’ve gone to and who might be coming back.”"

From the cast reveal video he shared, we know he stayed true to his word about bringing back AHS alum and favorites like Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates, who were missing from season 9.

But is the part about “…if you look at the iconography of the first three seasons…” also telling too? Will there be Murder House, Asylum and Coven tie-ins?

Possibly, especially based on the latest toothy American Horror Story season 10 clue he shared, which I’m still building up to but first there’s one more clue to examine, which ties into his most recent:

What’s up with those teeth and what could they possibly have to do with season 10?

Even more perplexing, one matter of fact comment on the post from a fan was: “Yes it’s going to be mermaids.”

How do you get to mermaids from those teeth? Seashell bras, flowing hair and tails I understand, but I apparently missed the memo that mermaids come with razor-sharp teeth.

However, even more perplexing, that mermaid comment may not be far off…

Okay, there are those teeth again. And at first, I was really thrown off because I thought that instrument was some sort of dental tool.

However, as fellow Netflix Life contributor and AHS fan Alexandria Ingram noted, that’s a tattoo needle, which would definitely connect it to season 4, Freak Show. She also said maybe the teal green glove is a mermaid clue, as she’d heard that theme speculation too.

There have also been hints that the season could see the season tying in stories of sirens.

Okay, sirens and sharp teeth make more sense to me than mermaids. Both are sexy, but sirens are dangerous. And I can’t imagine how scary they’ll be in the hands of Ryan Murphy.

If that’s even where American Horror Story season 10 goes. It’ll be fun to see if we’re right though.
