Wisconsin: D&D origins and more

Wisconsin has a couple of connections to Stranger Things. The first has to do with one of Hopper’s fellow police officers. John Paul Reynolds, who plays Officer Callahan, is from Madison, Wisconsin. Officer Callahan is a recurring character in the series and really is just there as an underling to Hopper.

He’s there when Hopper goes to question Mike, Lucas, and Dustin about Will’s disappearance and he’s there when they go searching the woods looking for Will and find his bike. He was also there when the body of what they thought was Will was found in the lake.

One of Callahan’s biggest moments in the entire show is when Steve and Jonathan were fighting in an alleyway and Callahan unintentionally gets hit in the face by Jonathan. They then take Jonathan into the station for “assaulting an officer.” This causes them to also see all the monster-hunting gear in his car.

While he does appear in all three seasons, Callahan’s biggest role is in season 1.

But he’s not the only connection the show has to Wisconsin. Dungeons and Dragons, one of the biggest inspirations for the show and the game the kids play in it, was first created in Wisconsin in 1974. The 50th anniversary of the game will be coming up in 2024.
