Ohio: Steven Speilberg inspiration

Ohio’s link to Stranger Things is all about Steven Spielberg and the inspiration his films have given the creators and writers of the Netflix show. Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1946.

His work has inspired so many filmmakers and artists, but the films that helped inspire Stranger Things are Jaws, E.T., and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, among others. You can see the inspiration for these movies all throughout the series.

You can see inspirations for Jaws in Jim Hopper and in the mayor in season 3. You can see inspiration from E.T. all throughout the series whether it be through Eleven loving Eggos (instead of Reese’s pieces), Dustin and Dart, the kids riding their bikes down the street, or the alien-like beings that are the Demogorgon or the Mind Flayer.

The inspiration from Close Encounters of the Third Kind is also very obvious throughout the show, but especially in season 2 with the images of The Mind Flayer hovering over the town with its tentacles out. Joyce’s whole character is also taken from the main character in Close Encounters, Roy Neary. They are both the worried parent trying to figure out how to get their kid back. The drawings in season 2 are also a callback to Close Encounters.

Steven Spielberg’s influence is all over Stranger Things.
