Massachusetts: Joe Keery

Massachusetts’s link to Stranger Things is all about the actor that plays everyone’s favorite babysitter and the dude who’s only friends are children (but not in a weird way) and a girl who is in love with a girl he used to date. That’s right! It’s Steve Harrington. The actor who plays him is Joe Kerry and he’s originally from Newburyport, Massachusetts.

The actor has become well-known for his glorious hair and his role as the leader of the ragtag gang of Stranger Things kids. When he’s not serving up ice cream at Scoops Ahoy, he’s joining forces with Dustin, Erica, and Robin to fight off Russians in the mall.

But Joe Kerry is not the only way that Stranger Things connects to The Bay State. It’s also where Jaws, a film Stranger Things and its writers have been inspired by, was filmed. While the movie takes place in the fictional Amity Island, New York, it was actually filmed in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

Steven Spielberg thought Long Island was too busy and they wanted a place that could look practically empty when they needed it to be, so they picked Martha’s Vineyard.

One of the biggest ways Jaws influenced Stranger Things was that the show actually used to be called Montauk to give a nod to the coastal setting in the Spielberg film and because it was going to take place there. That all changed later on, but there are still some Jaws references there.

Jim Hopper’s character was also created based on Chief Brody played by Roy Scheider in Jaws. Their police uniforms look eerily similar.

The introduction of a shady mayor in season 3 also harkened back to Jaws and the mayor that wouldn’t close the beaches despite the harm the sharks were doing.
