Challenger: The Final Flight

It’s not easy looking back on a tragedy, especially one that shook a nation at its core, but it is easy to revere brave individuals who risk it all in the name of exploration. The Netflix limited docu-series Challenge: The Final Flight looks back at that harrowing day, January 23, 1986, when the Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-099) launch didn’t go according to plan. The vessel broke apart only 73 seconds into its flight resulting in the death of all seven crew members aboard. The show offers an intimate look at what went wrong, the people involved, and the effects this event had on the future of NASA. The entire ordeal does become a heart-wrenching affair at times, but the brilliantly structured retelling is an instantly riveting endeavor and provides a lot of necessary insight.

Bad Robot, the production company where J.J. Abrams works out of, ha steamed up with Sutter Road Picture Company and Zipper Bros Films to tell this story like it’s never been told before. Directors Daniel Junge and Steven Lockhart have put together an informative and emotional experience consisting of four well-crafted episodes. Challenger: The Final Flight has received favorable reviews on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, making it a must-see for subscribers looking for a compelling watch about a significant moment in history.
