The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez
The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez is a 2020 true crime documentary series available on Netflix that chronicles the 2013 murder and abuse case of an eight-year-old boy from Palmdale, California, named Gabriel Fernandez. This innocent child was subjected to horrific treatment and abuse by his own mother and her boyfriend. But those weren’t the only guilty party in this case, as the show alleges that a fractured system of neglect and incompetence failed to protect this child when he needed it most. The results of this nefarious and unnecessary behavior were devastating, to say the least, and hopefully, this stirring endeavor brings some much-needed awareness to these types of problems plaguing our society.
The Netflix original series is directed by renowned documentary filmmaker Brian Knappenberger whose credits include The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz and We Are Legion: The Story of the Hacktivists, as well as his work on Bloomberg Game Changers. Now he puts his skills and expertise to the test with an incredibly heartwrenching and engrossing six-episode ordeal that Joel Keller from the Decider class a “must watch series.” Most critics agree, giving The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez favorable reviews, and while it may be hard to watch at times, it definitely fits the mold of a docuseries nobody should sleep on.
