Is Bly Manor real?

We’ve spent time comparing why Hill House is scarier than Bly Manor, reviewing the best memes, and even ranking Bly Manor’s characters, but what about the house? The main setting in the Netflix original series is “perfectly splendid,” and basically a character unto itself, but is the house in Bly Manor real?

Let’s take a look.

Bly Manor as a haunted house comes from the Henry James novella, The Turn of the Screw. It’s perfectly fictional.

However, O: The Oprah Magazine reports that James based his novella on the ghost stories he heard about Hinton Ampner, an English estate that was once located in Hampshire, England. The Tudor mansion was torn down well over a century ago, in 1893. In its place, a Georgian manor was erected.

One of the ghost stories about the original estate contends that a former Hinton Ampner resident, Lord Stawell, got busy with his sister-in-law, Honoria. Well, their “relations” ended up in a pregnancy that they chose to deal with in a horrific manner: by burying the baby under the house.

Afterward, paranormal activity that was reported there included hearing voices that sounded like a woman and two men having an argument.

When the new manor was built, which is also called Hinton Ampner, it’s said that they found a skull in the basement. Was it the baby’s? No one knows, but it certainly lent credence to the tale of the illicit relationship, its consequences and any restless spirits that unfortunate union may have produced.

However, even though both the novella and Netflix’s adaptation of The Haunting of Bly Manor was set in England, the series was filmed in Vancouver.

No one knows.

Were the exteriors real, CGI or one big elaborate set?

That remains a mystery.

Is the Bly Manor house listed on Zillow?

Harper’s Bazaar shared a fun tidbit about how, in an effort to promote the series, Netflix created a “very real Zillow listing for the property.”

The Zillow listing (which is clearly noted as a paid advertisement) includes an overview, as well as facts and features on both the manor’s interior and exterior features. They also include pictures of Bly Manor, both inside, outside and from around the grounds, which anyone who has seen the series will readily recognize.

You can also tell they had a lot of fun creating this fake listing, which is evident from its details like the “Time on Zillow” (eternity) to the number of views the listing has received (1987, which is the year most of the series takes place during).

Will we ever learn (a) if the house in Bly Manor is actually a real place and (b) where it is? Time will tell, and if it reveals that information we’ll be sure to share it!
