Must-watch movies on Netflix: Roma

Release Year: 2018

Directed By: Alfonso Cuarón

Starring: Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira

Each year, there are a handful of movies that are so talked about, you feel like you’ve already watched them without ever even seeing them. In 2018, Netflix award-winning, critically acclaimed original film Roma was one of those conversation-starting films driving the awards season buzz. But if the chatter put you off from watching it, it’s time to rectify that error in judgment. Alfonso Cuarón writes and directs a semi-autobiographical story about his own upbringing in 1970s Colonia Roma, Mexico City through the eyes of the live-in housekeeper of a middle class family.

Roma tied with The Favourite for the most Academy Award nominations earned by a single film at the 2019 ceremony, with 10 nods each. Ultimately, Roma took home three awards: Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography. It was the first Mexican film to win in the Best Foreign Language category and the first foreign language film to take home the award for Best Director. Furthermore, Roma was Netflix’s inaugural nomination for Best Picture, a feat in and of itself and a deserved accomplishment for a powerful must-watch film.
