Must-watch movies on Netflix: Miss Americana

Release Year: 2020

Directed By: Lana Wilson

Starring: Taylor Swift

Back in the day, MTV’s documentary series Diary pulled back the curtain on some of the most famous celebrities with the warning, “You think you know, but you have no idea.” While Diary isn’t still on TV, Netflix’s documentary Miss Americana more or less said the same thing about global music phenomenon Taylor Swift. By 2016, Swift had become too famous for her own good and lost control of her own narrative. The film takes a deeper look at the singer-songwriter’s career, personal struggles and choice to use her voice to enact political change.

Borrowing a title with the song “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince” from her 2019 blockbuster album Lover, the documentary holds a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes first debuted at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival before premiering on Netflix. Miss Americana introduces the world to Taylor Swift as we’ve never seen her before on a public stage: open, honest and unafraid to say what she wants to say. You’ll walk away from the must-watch documentary with a new respect for an artist whose dated reputation sometimes precedes her actual perception.
