As far as directorial debuts go, Greta Gerwig sure knocked it out of the park with Lady Bird from all aspects. Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan stars in the film as the titular Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, a high school student chomping at the bit to grow up. Surviving her final year at Catholic school, Lady Bird desires a life grander than her current circumstances can provide, which constantly puts her at odds with her strict mother, Marion (Laurie Metcalf). Between first loves to common teenage mistakes, Lady Bird learns the dangers of growing up too fast.

Lady Bird received universally positive reviews and became one of the best-rated movies of all time with its 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes — and yes, it’s deserving. The film performed well at the box office, making $79 million against a $10 million budget and scored five Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress and Original Screenplay. Gerwig followed up her lauded debut with Little Women, another multi-nominated Best Picture contender. If you have been sleeping on Greta Gerwig’s work, it’s time to enter the angsty world of Lady Bird.
