What would we have done without Netflix in 2020? In all honesty, would have been severely bored and without worthy escapism if the streaming service hadn’t continued to release a new original movie. Based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka (who also wrote the movie), The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as Andromache “Andy” of Scythia, who leads a group of centuries-old immortal mercenaries with the capability of healing themselves. When they realize the wrong people might be catching onto their secret, Andy leads them into a fight for their freedom.

The Old Guard first premiered on Netflix in July 2020 and earned mostly positive reception from critics with its 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. On top of its success in viewership, The Old Guard also received praise for its representation of the LGBTQ+ characters. Since a sequel to the original comic book was released in 2019, it’s unimaginable that Netflix won’t greenlight an official sequel to one of its biggest new original film releases of the year. For another breathless performance from Charlize Theron and some queer superheroes kicking butt, The Old Guard can’t be missed.
