In 2019, Netflix declared the romantic comedy officially back with Someone Great. Gina Rodriguez stars as Jenny Young, a music journalist preparing for a move to San Fransisco from New York City for her dream job at Rolling Stone magazine. Prior to her cross-country move, Jenny’s boyfriend of nine years, Nate (Lakeith Stanfield), breaks things off and deflates her excitement for the future. Being so, Jenny calls on her best friends Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise) for a final adventure through the city, which results in heightened emotions and cathartic revelations.

Someone Great received mostly positive reviews from critics and became an instant hit upon release. Because of the film’s success, the 2017 song “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo, which is featured in a hilariously relatable scene, began charting until it eventually topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Not to mention, Taylor Swift was inspired by the film to write the song “Death by a Thousand Cuts” from her 2019 album Lover. Like any great rom-com, music is a driving creative force in Someone Great, and it’s certainly something great and a must-watch Netflix original movie.
