Even though movie releases have been few and far between in 2020, Netflix hasn’t slowed down in its releases of new original movies. In fact, the streaming service has releases some of its best originals this year, including the Ryan Murphy production The Boys in the Band. Based on Mart Crowley’s 1968 stage play of the same name, The Boys in the Band centers on a group of gay friends in New York City 1968 as they reunite for a birthday celebration. However, the host’s straight college roommate makes a surprise appearance and turns the evening upside down.

The Boys in the Band premiered on Netflix on September 30 to mostly positive reviews and holds an 80% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. As a new film to the platform, The Boys in the Band has just barely scratched the surface of its reach in this very weird year of content consumption. It’s conceivable that although it wasn’t a breakout success by way of some of the biggest titles on Netflix, it could attain a strong cult following in the future. With a strong and recognizable cast and the keen eye of Ryan Murphy, there’s no way The Boys in the Band could have ever been anything but a must-watch.
