Because there are so many new movies moving and shaking on Netflix, sometimes it can be hard to keep track of everything. Being so, some original movies wind up becoming severely underrated. Coming-of-age romantic comedy Alex Strangelove happens to be one such underrated Netflix original. Daniel Doheny stars as Alex Truelove, a high school student with his sights set on losing his virginity to his girlfriend, Claire (Madeline Weinstein). However, when he meets Elliot (Antonio Marziale), an openly gay student from across town, Alex finds himself crushing.

Alex Strangelove first premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival in April 2018 before making its worldwide Netflix debut in June of the same year. The film holds an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its refreshingly mature exploration of teen sexuality. While not a perfect movie, it’s without question one of the most charming and honest coming-of-age movies on the streaming service’s roster. If you missed Alex Strangelove the first time around, it’s the perfect time to revisit the criminally undervalued movie that’s as heartwarming as it is funny and relatable.
