Must-watch movies on Netflix: She’s Gotta Have It

Release Year: 1986

Directed By: Spike Lee

Starring: Tracy Camilla Johns, Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell, Spike Lee, Raye Dowell

We all know that handfuls of throwback movies call Netflix home from month to month, which makes a nostalgic movie marathon ready at the click of a button. One throwback that’s currently streaming is Spike Lee’s directorial debut film She’s Gotta Have It. Tracy Camilla Johns stars in the comedy-drama as Nola Darling, a young Brooklyn woman who decides to date three drastically different men at the same time. All with their own pros and cons, she can’t seem to choose between Greer Childs (John Canada Terrell), Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks) and Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee).

She’s Gotta Have It earned praise from critics as reflected by its 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, which was shot in black-and-white for a mean budget of $175K, was a relative box office hit with its $7.1 million cumulative gross. Spike Lee won an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature and rebooted the film for a series of the same name on Netflix, which ran for two seasons and gave Lee a chance to update the storytelling. As a perfect companion to the underrated fan-favorite series, the original film remains a must-watch throwback to the ’80s.
