There’s no getting around it: the Grinch is a Christmas icon. The green creature who hates the holidays returned to the big screen in 2018 in the animated remake obviously called The Grinch. As the legend goes, the Grinch lives in isolation with his dog, Max, inside a cave within the snowy Mount Crumpet. When Whoville’s Christmas celebration gets bigger, the Grinch’s agitation with the holidays pushes him to steal back his solitude. The Grinch devises a plan to pose as Santa Claus and reverse the holiday cheer coursing through all of Whoville for good.

The Grinch arrived in theaters as a commercial success, making a whopping $511.6 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. Still, the film received middling reviews from critics with its 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Regardless of its reception, the new generation of animated film lovers will adore this new take on the holiday classic. But if you’re a millennial looking for a throwback, the Jim Carrey adaptation from 2000 also currently streams on Netflix. Each year, The Grinch is a spirited must-watch to make sure your heart grows three sizes too big.
