Must-watch movies on Netflix: Unicorn Store

Release Year: 2017

Directed By: Brie Larson

Starring: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Joan Cusack, Bradley Whitford, Karan Soni, Mamoudou Athie, Mary Holland, Hamish Linklater

By now, everyone knows Brie Larson as the Academy Award-winning star of Room and the superhero otherwise known as Captain Marvel. But on top of acting, she’s a multifaceted artist who can sing, direct and, as of late, do a little gaming on YouTube. In 2019, her directorial debut film Unicorn Store premiered on Netflix and offered another side of the breakout movie star. Larson stars in the film as Kit, a dreamer who finds herself in the position of fulfilling her dream of owning her very own unicorn in the midst of an especially trying time professionally.

Unicorn Store received middling reviews from critics with its 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, those reviews are a little too hard on the impossibly charming movie. Viewers can relate to Kit, an artist whose impenetrable imagination grapples with criticism at every turn. Larson creates a character and world worth escaping to and believing in. It’s crazy that Larson had auditioned for the film years before signing on as director and star. If that’s not proof that dreams can come true, then you need to watch Unicorn Store on Netflix for a dose of magic.
