Will Grey’s Anatomy season 17 be the final season?

Is Grey’s Anatomy ending? Grey’s Anatomy might be coming to an end soon.

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo told Variety that the series might end after season 17, which is scheduled to premiere on Nov. 12, 2020.

Pompeo’s contract after this season, and so, it’s possible that Grey’s Anatomy could pack it in if the star doesn’t want to return. Grey’s Anatomy is one of the longest-running TV shows and one of ABC’s most popular shows.

Here’s what Pompeo said about Grey’s Anatomy ending, via Variety:

"“I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year? But it could very well could be.”"

It seems like Pompeo was half-joking after she said that. The Variety piece mentions Pompeo said this afterward.

"“There’s your sound bite! There’s your clickbait!”"

There’s been speculation for years that Grey’s Anatomy would be coming to an end sooner rather than later, but nothing was ever confirmed. That’s what happens to all shows with huge fanbases and tons of seasons. Once the rumors get started, it’s hard to put that toothpaste back in the tube, if you know what I mean.

I’m guessing this is much ago about nothing, honestly. It’d seem dumb for ABC to end its most popular show. Stranger things have happened, but I mean, Grey’s Anatomy should be pretty safe.

Is Grey’s Anatomy season 18 happening?

ABC has not renewed Grey’s Anatomy for season 18 yet. We’ll likely see that announcement come sometime this spring.

I don’t think ABC is going to cancel this series. There’s no reason to do that right now, especially when the show is still pulling ratings. If Pompeo was done, then, maybe, I could see the show ending.

More likely, I expect ABC to renew the series and announce the final season. That gives the cast, the creative team, and the fans the time to prepare. It also would (or should) create a ratings bump with people tuning in to find out what happens and how the series ends.

That’s what should happen with a show like this. It helps the fans get a little bit of closure and it allows the creative team to end the show how they want to end things.

So, for now, I’m expecting Grey’s Anatomy season 17 not to be the final season. I’m expecting Grey’s Anatomy season 18 to happen, and I’m guessing they’ll probably make at least three more seasons and end with season 20. That’d be the direction I’d go with the show.
