Sci-fi movies on Netflix: District 9 (2009)

District 9 is a film that was a big deal when it was released back in 2009, outdoing all expectations, including garnering over $200 million at the box office against a $31 million budget and securing four academy award nominations, including the highly coveted Best Picture accolade. This critically acclaimed Peter Jackson produced affair is the film that put science fiction filmmaker extraordinaire Neil Blomkamp on the map and offers an intriguing look at how humans would treat extraterrestrial refugees. But sadly, many people have continued to sleep on this brilliant motion picture starring Sharlto Copely. Thankfully Netflix has made sure that this underrated cinematic classic has a chance to be experienced by its subscribers.

The narrative touches upon relevant themes, including humanity, xenophobia, and social segregation. District 9 kicks things off in an alternate 1982 when an alien spaceship becomes stranded above Johannesburg, South Africa, containing a population of malnourished insect-like aliens. The South African government confines them to an internment camp called District 9. Two decades later, the government relocates the aliens to another camp, and in the process, a bureaucrat becomes entangled in one of the inhabitant’s attempts to escape to the ship and use it to get back to their planet. This well-crafted endeavor is exceptionally executed, utilizing interviews and the found footage style at times, enhancing the experience as well as allowing the powerful story to truly sink in.
