Sci-fi movies on Netflix: Splice (2009)

Splice is one of those films that felt somewhat under the radar when it first released, but for those that did manage to check it out were offered up a unique and horrifying look at the potential consequences of gene-editing, a science that continues to become more relevant every day. The frightening science fiction flick is executive produced by the master himself, Guillermo Del Toro, and his helmet by Cube director Vincenzo Natali. Helping bring the movie, Roger Ebert called “well done and intriguing,” to life are some fantastic performances from The Pianist’s Adrian Brody, Dawn of the Dead’s Sara Polley, and most notably of all French actress Delphine Chanéac.

Splice follows two ambitious genetic engineers named Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast. Together they hope to change the world by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals intended for medical use. When they fail to achieve the results they were hoping for, they take a drastic measure and attempt to introduce human DNA into their work of splicing animal genes resulting in a prepubescent female creature named Dren that is much smarter than they think. Watching Dren evolve over the course of the films truly a remarkable sight, and when things inevitably go wrong, audiences will be in for a suspense-filled thrill ride. Playing god never ends well, and messing with mother nature proves to be deadly, making Splice a top-tier choice for Netflix subscribers looking for a sci-fi scare-fest.
