Sci-fi movies on Netflix: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

For those out there that enjoyed Charlie Kauffman’s 2020 Netflix original film, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and like that style of film, should definitely check out one of the talented screenwriters earlier works that some consider to be downright masterful. The 2004 gem Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was nominated for every award imaginable, took home an Oscar for Best Screenplay, and is regarded by most critics as one of the best films of the 21st century, with IMDB listing it in their top 100 Top Rated Movies. The beautiful crafted sci-fit romance drama stars Jim Carrey in what many believe is a career-defining performance and Kate Winslet, who earned one of her many Academy Award nominations for her terrific turn in the timeless feature.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind follows an estranged couple who have erased each other from their memories. The way the film superbly utilizes key elements of what one would expect to see in a psychological thriller and takes a nonlinear narrative approach to explore the nature of memory, love, and loss is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to breaking down everything great about the entire mind-bending affair. Along with Carrey and Winslet, the film features a ton of recognizable faces, including Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson, leaving little reason for Netflix subscribers not to take a chance win this classic or relive the greatness once again.
