The cancellation streak at Netflix continues. Away has been canceled after one season on Netflix.

Away season 2 is not happening at Netflix. Deadline reported the news on Monday, Oct. 19.

Away premiered on Netflix on Sept. 4 and was one of the most-watched Netflix shows of early September. The show was on the Netflix Top 10 list for a while, but it doesn’t appear that enough viewers tuned into for the space series.

It’s a bummer when Netflix or any network cancels a show. Lately, it feels like a lot of shows have been getting the axe at Netflix. Away is the latest Netflix show to be canceled.

Away starred Hilary Swank and followed a team of astronauts from various countries who go on a mission to Mars. The first season ended on a cliffhanger, and now, we’ll never get to know how the series was going to continue.

It’s unclear why Away was canceled at this point. We should learn more about Netflix’s reasons in due time.

Overall, this is a relatively quick cancellation for Netflix. Usually, we have to wait about two months or more to find out if a show is coming back or canceled. So, either Away was not watched nearly enough by viewers or something else happened behind the scenes to bring the series to an end.

My guess is that it is probably a combination of things that led to Away’s cancellation on Netflix. It’s likely that it didn’t quite get enough viewers to offset the budget. With uncertainty in the TV and film industry because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix and other studios are being forced to expand budgets and pay for more crew and testing on-set. That likely raises the bar a little bit for Netflix when deciding whether or not to renew a show.

So many productions are delayed right now, too. I don’t know if that had anything to do with the decision, but it could have.
