Is The Silence of the Lambs actually scary?

As far as scary movies go, I think anyone would be hard-pressed to find someone who watched the 1991 cinema classic The Silence of the Lambs from Jonathan Demme that wasn’t scared straight the entire time.

The chillingly effective adaptation of the thrilling Thomas Harris story has been revered for its masterful performances from Anthony Hopkins and Jodie foster, but what really puts the film on the map is the manner of suspense it exudes on anyone watching, resulting in a truly terrifying experience.

From the menacing dialogue to the sinister serial killer hunt, unraveling the mystery proves to be much scarier than the atrocious acts they are trying to investigate.

It’s hard to believe that a man locked in a cage with a substantial amount of security can become such a dreadful presence on screen, and his very creepy gaze haunts audiences nightmares to this day. Dr. Hannibal Lecter still remains as the pound for pound scariest cannibal to ever grace the big screen, and while buffalo bill is no picnic in the fear department, its the Chianti and java bean loving therapist will diagnose any viewer with an acute case of scared silly. Not every fearful flick stands the test of time, but nearly three decades later, The Silence of the Lambs still holds up as one of the best films ever made.
