Is Sweetheart actually scary?

Living out on a desert isle always seems like it would be a paradise worth experiencing a shipwreck to get to, but no one ever thinks about the monstrous consequences that can come with being stranded with nowhere to run or hide and the nearest help is miles away.

Sweetheart takes Netflix subscribers to that very same scenario when a survivor washes up ashore on a remote beach, and she quickly starts to realize that’s he isn’t alone. This slow-burn thriller has its bloodthirsty seas creature reveal itself little by little, building the suspense with every step it takes. But the way director J.D. Dillard keeps viewers feeling isolated and trapped throughout the decent runtime enhances the dread amplifying off of the aquatic beast.

The Sundance Blumhouse film skipped a theatrical run to debut on the streaming service, with people praising it for its execution and its ability to more with less. Kiersey Clemons also gives an extraordinary performance solidifying her candidacy for scream queen honors and powerfully proves that she is one Sweetheart, not to be underestimated. This eerie escape will not disappoint and definitely deserves to be watched with the lights out and preferably not near any large body of water, because, well, you never know.
