Is Dark Skies actually scary?

Dark Skies is a masterfully crafted sci-fi horror film from the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious that takes the concept of alien abductions to a terrifying new level. The thing that really sets this apart from other eerie extraterrestrial endeavors is the way it portrays humans, almost like wildlife being studied, experimented on, and tampered with by a being of higher intelligence like how people interact with animals except we are the guinea pigs. The idea of an alien lab rat in one’s own home where no one believes you and you are almost powerless to stop this uncaring, malevolent force is enough to put anyone in a nerve-racking state of trepidation.

The film stars Keri Russell as the mother of a family being terrorized in mysterious ways by an unknown visitor referred to as the Sandman by her son. They wake up to find strange symbols in light and weird displays created with household items. Then the situation escalates when a flock of birds kamikazes into their living room window like some magnetic force was pulling them towards it. Unexplained blackouts, weird brands on their skins, and the feeling of not being in control start to plague the family soon after. Then they reach out to the resident expert, played by J.K. Simmons, who tells them that they will take their son, move on and do it again until they find what they are looking for.

The ending of Dark Skies will definitely stay with Netflix subscribers after the credits roll and will keep their minds pondering while staring into the sky with caution.
