Is The Girl with All the Gifts actually scary?

This is a rather bold claim, but given how good the film is and how criminally under-appreciated it has been since its release, it’s very safe to assume that the 2016 triumph of cinema The Girl With All the Gifts is the best zombie movie you have more than likely never heard of nor had the pleasure of experiencing it in its magnificently unnerving glory.

From director Colm McCarthy, responsible for helming the dark Netflix anthology series Black Mirror’s The black museum episode, the taut thriller and unique take on the fan-favorite genre stars Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close, Paddy Considine, and fantastic turn from Sennia Nanua.

The film’s enticing narrative takes place in a dystopian future after society collapses as a result of most of the human population being wiped out by a nasty fungal infection, which is past through the exchange of bodily fluids. The end result is people turning into menacing zombie-like creatures that are referred to in the motion picture as “hungries.” The film centers on a scientist and a soldier’s efforts to protect a second-generation born girl with the infection that, despite retaining the extreme hunger for flesh, is still able to think and learn. The Girl With All the Gifts takes viewers on a rousing adventure of survival full of well-crafted scares and edge of your seat suspense that makes this one to watch out for when scrolling for a superb zombie motion picture.
