Is The Blackcoat’s Daughter actually scary?

The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a perfect example of superb horror filmmaking and offers up an intriguing take on the possession narrative. Osgood Perkins directs this dark and brooding tale that is intricately woven over two engrossing parallel storylines and three girls, all taking a different path involving a school and an evil force that dwells within its walls.

At first glance, it seems like this mysterious thriller will be a predictable ordeal, but viewers will quickly learn to expect the frighteningly unexpected in this dark, desolate, dread fest.

The film features a remarkable cast of seasoned horror vets, including the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka, American Horror Story’s Emma Roberts, and Apostle’s Lucy Boynton. Shipka and Boynton play two girls that are stuck at boarding school during a long, cold, and isolating break where slow-burn supernatural occurrences begin to raise the levels of tension.

Meanwhile, Roberts plays another mysterious character who intriguingly escaped from a mental institution and is making her way to the very same school with the help of a cornered couple. Nothing is as what it seems, and trying to solve the terrifying puzzle adds significant value to the horrifying experience that is The Blackcoat’s Daughter. Netflix subscribers should be warned that the final moments are brilliantly shocking, and it will more than likely possess viewers to endure a second viewing.
