The new chilling Netflix original documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door is set to release on Netflix tonight at 12:01 a.m. PT. Those of us on the East Coast will have to wait until 3:01 a.m. for the release of this documentary.

For all true crime enthusiasts, this documentary will be well worth the wait. Even those people who may not enjoy true crime, this documentary will catch your attention with its reporting and never before seen archives.

It’s the story we all know. The story that struck America back in 2018. The disappearances of Shanann Watts and her two young daughters, Celeste and Bella.

This is a heartbreaking story that went from a mom and her two daughters missing, to something much bigger.

Watch the trailer below!

Back on Aug. 14, 2018, Shanann and her two daughters were reported missing in their home town of Frederick, Colorado. A few days later, their bodies were discovered in an oil field after Shanann’s husband, Chris Watts, confessed to the murders and told investigators where he disposed of the bodies.

This documentary which is directed by the incredible Jenny Popplewell is different than most documentaries. American Murder uses social media, police video, text messages, home videos, and more to tell its story. This entire documentary is told through the eyes and voice of the people involved in this case.

It’s always good to have the people that were involved help shape the story rather than the ones on the outside and director Jenny Popplewell does a terrific job piecing these archive videos together. Most importantly, Jenny lets the victim, Shanann, tell the story in her own words.

With that being said, American Murder will most likely not have reasoning or made sense of why this terrible tragedy happened but will show and remind you that social media is sometimes a front. That what may look like the perfect life online to others could be far different once that phone or computer is shut off. It, unfortunately, was for Shanann.

It’s always tough hearing stories that end in such tragedy and this documentary is no different but there’s always some light that comes out of even the darkest of situations.

Make sure you tune into American Murder: The Family Next Door as it hits Netflix tonight.
