Netflix movies and shows: Away
Let’s go to space! Away premiered on Netflix on Sept. 4 and follows the first expedition to Mars with an actual crew aboard the ship. The crew of international astronauts consists of a Chinese chemist, a Russian astronaut with prior space experience, an Indian medical officer, a British botanist, and an American astronaut, Emma Green, who is their commander. Emma’s husband would have been on the mission but a medical condition came up that meant he was grounded.
They embark on a three-year mission that goes from the moon and onto Mars. As the series begins, we see that several of the crew members do not trust Emma because of how she responded to a prior crisis.
The show switches between what’s going on up in space and what’s happening on Earth. Between problems with the ship, Emma’s daughter’s stress over her mom in space and her dad’s health condition, and secret love affairs on the ship, there is a lot of dramatic moments on Away.
Putting that many people in one small space is always going to bring out drama between people, but add in illness and it gets even worse. One of the crew gets mononucleosis and during a hallucination tries to open the airlock which could kill him.
Additionally, as Christmas approaches (imagine being in space during the holidays), the crew say goodbye to their family and friends as they are about to lose contact with Earth as they move further towards Mars.
But as much as this show is about the extraordinary mission, it’s also about what the people at home have to deal with when their loved ones are so far away. Emma’s daughter sneaks out and her husband has to deal with her while trying to figure out life in a wheelchair.
He also eventually meets her new boyfriend (who she was sneaking out for) and you can’t really find a much more everyday occurrence than a dad meeting his daughter’s new boyfriend. Even on a space show, you can find mundane occurrences.
So whether you’re in it for the space exploration or the drama of the characters, there is something for everyone on this show.
