Netflix movies and shows: Cobra Kai
If you haven’t caught the first two seasons of Cobra Kai since they’ve come on Netflix, now is the perfect time. The show started as a web series, but once they gained a large audience, they made the jump to Netflix. Season 3 will be the first to premiere on Netflix and should be coming in 2021.
The show is a reboot of the Karate Kid films but from the point of view of Johnny Lawrence who lost the All-Valley Under-18 Karate Championship in 1984. It’s now it’s 34 years later and he’s still struggling. He’s trying to make a living off of being a handyman while his nemesis, Daniel LaRusso, is running a successful car dealership.
But things start looking up when he saves his teenage neighbor, Miguel, from a group of bullies. This mirrors the scene in the original Karate Kid when Miyagi saves Daniel from bullies.
Unfortunately, Johnny is then arrested for assault. He then decides to agree to be Miguel’s sensei and to open his own Cobra Kai dojo with the money he receives from his step-father.
Not everything is just about Johnny and Daniel training though. The show also delves into Johnny and Daniel’s kids and how those kids affect their relationship with each other. Miguel also goes to school with Daniel’s daughter and tries to defend her using the skills he learns from Johnny.
While recruiting kids to the dojo and training Miguel helps Johnny feel better about himself, he still finds himself drinking too much, vandalizing billboards, and bullying kids (not a good look), but eventually, he tries to get his life together for his son and for himself.
The Cobra Kai dojo even gets to compete in the tournament Johnny initially lost in all those years ago. But Johnny’s teachings end up coming back to haunt him later in the series.
