Ratched season 1: Is Edmund in the original movie?
By Sandy C.
Is Edmund on Ratched a part of the original movie, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest?
Ratched is now streaming on Netflix and has no shortage of fascinating characters. One is Edmund, portrayed by the wonderful Finn Wittrock.
Ryan Murph’s psychological horror-drama has entered Netflix. The series follows the infamous Nurse Mildred Ratched in her early days as a nurse. Some fans may have already known of the iconic character.
Mildred makes her first appearance in the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey. The book was later adapted into an award-winning film of the same name, one that went on to earn an Academy Award for Best Picture.
Louise Fletcher, who portrays Mildred Ratched, also won an Academy Award for Best Actress and Jack Nicholson Best Actor for their work in the movie. Ratched on Netflix, however, introduces audiences to an entirely different nurse.
The nurse isn’t sinister, yet. But you can definitely see roots of manipulation starting to grow. More of Ratched’s journey will be explored in season 2. In the meantime, fans who haven’t read or watched the original movie are wondering if Edmund, who is an important part of the series, is in the novel.
Edmund is a significant part of Ratched’s journey
As important as Edmund is in the Netflix series, he isn’t needed in the novel or movie. So no, Edmund is not part of the original story.
Haven’t watched the series on Netflix? Please note spoilers are ahead!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, both novel and movie, take place in the future. Since the nurse we meet in the Netflix series doesn’t have the same persona and attitude as the one in the novel, it’s safe to say Ratched’s character has not been broken yet.
Something huge is about to happen in her life that will transform her for the worst. My guess is that she’ll end up killing her brother Edmund, which is why there’s no mention of him in the book or movie. She may also lose Gwen (Cynthia Nixon), her true love.
What do you think will be so impactful that she will transform into the monster we first met?
