Riverdale season 5 starts filming
Riverdale season 5 is officially filming!
Months after production would have started, Robert Aguirre-Sacasa shared an image from the first day back on the set of Riverdale. The first scene of the season, as Aguirre-Sacasa points out, features Archie, played by star KJ Apa, in a steam room. What’s new?
Riverdale opened up production offices earlier this month to prepare for the start of filming on season 5. The cast recently returned to Vancouver and had to quarantine for 14 days before they could start filming the new season.
Remember, the first few episodes of Riverdale season 5 will actually be the last few episodes of Riverdale season 4. The season was cut short because of the production shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic last spring.
The new season will also feature a seven-year time jump that brings Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Cheryl and the rest of these characters well into adulthood. That’s a super exciting development and I can’t wait to see how it shakes out.

When does Riverdale season 5 premiere?
Normally, we’d be expecting to see Riverdale season 5 premiere on The CW in the next month or so. New seasons almost always premiere in October. But, 2020 is a weird year for movies and TV with the coronavirus pandemic.
Accordingly, the Riverdale season 5 premiere has been pushed back to January 2021. We don’t know that official date yet, but that’s the month when the new season will premiere.
There was some fear that date might not be doable if filming couldn’t get started soon. Unless there are any major delays to production, that premiere date will happen sometime in January 2021.
If there are delays, we could see the Riverdale season 5 premiere pushed back. It’s happened with a lot of other shows and movies with cast and crew members testing positive for COVID-19.
At the time of publishing, we’re anticipating Riverdale season 5 will be released on Netflix in the late summer of 2021. The season finale should air in July or August, and then the season will be added to Netflix eight days after the finale airs on The CW.
We’ll let you know more about Riverdale season 5 when we find out. Now that the show is filming the new season, we should learn a lot more about the season in the coming weeks.
You can watch the first four seasons of the hit teen series on Netflix right now.
